For trafficking their nationals for prostitution, three Chinese nationals were on Monday June 22, sentenced to a total of 41 years imprisonment in hard labor by an Accra Circuit Court.

A Kumasi Circuit Court, has sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in hard labour, a 26-year-old man, Akwasi Kankam, for defiling a six year-old girl
He pleaded not guilty.

Ghana@50 probe inaugurated
Vice-President John Mahama yesterday inaugurated the Presidential Commission of Enquiry into the Ghana@50 celebrations at the Castle, Osu, and charged it to be objective, fair and just in its work. "Our strong desire is for an objective, fair and just enquiry that establishes the cold, hard facts of all transactions and activities related to the 50th anniversary celebration," he said.

President to broker gas deal
President John Evans Atta Mills says he is determined to broker a deal for a reliable gas supply from Nigeria to boost electricity production in Ghana. He said the government would do everything possible to ensure that power generation plants, particularly the newly built Sunon Asogli Power plant, had gas to generate electricity to supplement the country's current stock.

President Mills: NPP government left a big hole in the economy
The president John Evans Atta Mills has accused the previous New Patriotic Party government of leaving the country in a dire state. According to him, the previous government piled so much debt and left a “big hole” in the economy, making it difficult for his government to maneuver. President Mills said the economy is in such a sorry state that international banks have refused to lend money to the country for development projects.

Kufuor, Aliu cry out over unpaid salaries
Former President, J. A Kufuor and former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, have not been paid their monthly salaries since they left office six months ago. Former workers of the two Statesmen have also not been paid their entitlements. Apart from the entitlements stated in the Chinery Hesse report, the two Statesmen, particular Mr. Kufuor is entitled to a monthly pay.

Another shakeup in the Police Service
Another shakeup in the Ghana Police Service has been effected, the second since Paul Tawiah Quaye assumed leadership of this foremost internal security organization barely a month ago. Although such movements have now become standards of every leadership change, this particular one appears to have triggered muffled grumbling by some officers who think that the exercise has turned upside down the seniority table in the regimented service.

Veep advices workers: Don't opt out of single spine salary
Vice-President John Dramani Mahama has asked public sector workers who have threatened to opt out of the single spine salary structure (SSSS) to rescind their decision. He said such a decision would not "augur well for an equitable and fair salary administration in the public sector". His call was in apparent reference to some public sector workers, including doctors, who have indicated that they will not subscribe to the new pay policy unless the relativity ratios in it are corrected.

Ghana's gold output up 9 percent
Ghana's gold output in the first quarter of 2009 was 675,151 ounces, up 9 percent on the first three months of last year, while higher world prices pushed cumulative mining revenue up 11 percent to $641.2 million, Chamber of Mines data showed on Saturday. Ghana, the world's no.2 cocoa producer, is also Africa's second biggest gold miner after South Africa.
