A tipper truck loaded with sand that was crossing a bridge has fallen into the river on the Ntensere-Sokwai road in the Atwima Nwabiagya North district in the Ashanti region.
It is reported that two persons are injured as a result of the incident.
The tragedy occurred this morning, June 1, 2023, when the truck which was crossing the Ntensere-Sokwai Bridge collapsed.
The bridge looked like a death trap for commuters, owing to its bad state, and was even more precarious during rainy seasons.
The incident has made it impossible for people to commute by car, putting both workers and schoolchildren in uncomfortable situations.
People who can manage the circumstances had to take off their shoes and cross the bridge on the narrow, muddy, and slippery crossing.
At the time of this report, efforts were being made to get the truck out of the river.
Residents claimed that every effort and petition to get repairs done on the crumbling bridge was ignored by the district assembly and the Member of Parliament.
After voting for him in 2016, the constituents could not understand why the MP for the district, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio, had broken so many of his pledges to rebuild the bridge.
“The bridge started collapsing way back in 2016, the district assembly and the MP are aware of the situation but they have all ignored us. Now we don’t know what to do again,” the frustrated residents lamented.
In order to prevent a worsening of the situation, the constituents called on the district assembly and the MP to consider and hasten the process of repairing the bridge.
