The Minister of Energy, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has announced plans for some 200 islands on the Volta Lake in the Volta Region to be connected to the national grid.
Dr Prempeh said plans are far-advanced to connect many of these islands on the Volta Lake to the national grid using solar panels and battery UPSs.
The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, made this announcement on Accra-based Asempa FM on Thursday, 2 December 2021.
According to him, there are some 2,400 villages yet to be connected to the national grid.
He said plans are in the pipeline to have many of these villages connected to the national grid.
He was quick to add that there have been delays in connecting many of these villages to the national grid because they are the difficult areas in the country.
“In spite of all these difficulties the government has been able to achieve 86.22 per cent national coverage in the past five years of Akufo-Addo’s administration,” he said.
He said the coverage has been slow because the villages are located in the most difficult areas of the country.
