An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday, 5 January 2022 denied the 12 suspects arrested for their alleged involvement in the Bawku conflict bail.

Although the charges of the accused persons were read to them, their pleas were not taken.

Their lawyer, Mr Martin Kpebu, told the court that holding the suspects in custody constituted a breach of their fundamental human rights guaranteed in the 1992 Constitution.

The court, however, refused to grant the 12 accused persons bail.

Presiding judge Emmanuel Essandoh said the case borders on “fundamental human rights and it is only the High Court that has the jurisdiction to determine same”.

The 12 accused persons, a female and eleven males, were arrested and detained in connection with some chieftaincy disturbances in the community recently.

There were reports of gunshots in Bawku in the early hours of Monday, 27 December 2021 that led to the destruction of property and loss of lives.

A similar incident occurred on Thursday, 18 November 2021 that led to the imposition of a curfew on the town.
