Michael Ballack’s son, Emilio, has died at the age of 18 after being involved in a quad crash.
Michael Ballack’s 18-year-old son has passed away in a tragic quad crash, Portuguese media have reported. The teenager is said to have died in the early hours of the morning in Troia, Portugal.
The accident is said to have happened around 2am, where firefighters were called to the scene.
Firefighters who were among the emergency services sent to the scene were unable to confirm the dead man was Michael Ballack’s son.
But they revealed the tragedy happened when the quad fell on top of the victim and crushed him on land at the estate where he was staying.
An officer based at Grandola near Troia said: “I know the dead man was the son of a well-known footballer but I don’t have details about who it was.
“The accident happened at the family home. The quad rider wasn’t on a public road and his was the only vehicle involved.
“The quad was on an uneven piece of land and at this stage it appears to have gone backwards and as it did fell on top of the victim and crushed him.
Efforts to revive the youngster at the scene were unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the spot where the accident occurred.
GNR police based in Troia and paramedics were also mobilised. Trained counsellors are said to be helping the dead man’s family, who according to one of the emergency responders were in the house at the time.
The teenager’s body has been taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in the city of Santiago de Cacem south of the scene of the accident for a post-mortem.
Reports in Portugal state the tragic incident occurred on a plot of land near a house Michael Ballack bought several years ago.
The vehicle Emilio was riding on at the time is said to have been designed for the public road.
Emilio was one of Ballack’s three children the former German footballer shares with ex-wife Simone Lambe.
He was born in 2002, a year after Ballack’s eldest son, Louis, and three years before his youngest, Jordi.
The 18-year-old recently posted pictures on social media of his time in Portugal, sharing photos of his time with family.
And there has been an outpouring of support on social media following the news of Emilio’s death.
One fan wrote: “Oh my god this a so awful. Thoughts going out to Michael Ballack and his family.”
Another said: “Prayers are with Michael Ballack at this time and with his family.”
A third posted: “Sincere condolences going out to the family of Michael Ballack right now. Our thoughts are with you all.”
Michael Ballack retired from professional football in 2012 and is regarded as one of the greatest German internationals of all time.
He joined Chelsea in 2006 and won honours in his first season at the club.
He left Stamford Bridge after playing part of a league and cup double in 2010.
Ballack’s four-year spell at Chelsea was the longest time he spent at one club at one time, scoring 25 goals and providing 24 assists in 167 appearances.
Ballack is also one of the greatest goalscorers for the national side in their history.
He managed 42 goals in 98 appearances for the German national side.
After leaving Chelsea in 2010, Ballack returned to Bayer Leverkusen where he first made a name for himself.
He made limited appearances for the Bundesliga outfit though before announcing his retirement.
