A coconut seller, Kwame Basabasa has been found dead at Saltpond in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

The coconut seller believed to be in his forties, was found dead in a gutter under a coconut tree on Thursday, 16 December 2021.

Well-known for plying his trade in either a wheel barrow or pan at the Taxi rank located at the Saltpond junction, the coconut seller, was found with a sack of coconuts beside his body with a bunch of coconut scattered under the tree.

ClassFM’s Central Regional Correspondent Raymond Kwofie who visited the scene reported that, the deceased is believed to have fallen off from the coconut tree under which he was found dead.

Some persons in the community had made several complaints to the Saltpond Police over counting losses from their coconut farms.

The deceased according to sources, did not own a coconut tree and was alleged to have been stealing from people’s trees to sell to his customers.

People who climb coconut trees in the community usually do so with sacks behind them, the deceased is therefore suspected to have employed the same method.

However, he is believed to have lost his balance in an attempt to reposition himself or the sack while on the tree.

While some residents of the community are suspecting he was hit with a catapult by someone who saw him climb the tree and landed dead in the gutter, others attribute his death to a spiritual cause, noting that the tree belonged to an old man, thus, it was the deceased’s punishment for stealing from people.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital Morgue by the Police, awaiting identification by his family.
