Dr Richard Amoako Baah, a political scientist has said the Speaker of Parliament has no power to remove the president from office as he [Bagbin] claims.
During a post-budget forum held in Ho in the Volta Region, Alban Bagbin said he can remove the president from office through Parliament, but the president cannot remove him as a speaker.
Bagbin stated that “Parliament can remove His Excellency the President; His Excellency cannot do that to Parliament. As Speaker, His Excellency cannot remove me, but I can through Parliament get him [the president] removed,” he noted.
However, speaking to Asaase News, Dr Amoako Baah said the speaker does not wield such authority but has the power to initiate the processes to remove the president.
“What he’s saying is absolutely wrong and is unbecoming of his office to be making such pronouncements. He behaves as if he’s outside the government. He’s part of the government. He doesn’t have any power to remove the president, he has the power as the speaker to initiate the process to remove the president. So, it is the members of parliament who vote to remove the president by 2/3 majority,” he stated.
“Never worked for your position”
Earlier, John Boadu, the general secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, is a beneficiary of a position he never worked for and this is the reason for some of his comments in recent times.
According to Boadu, recent comments by the Speaker of Parliament suggesting that he (Alban Bagbin) has the “powers to remove the president but the president cannot remove him” are unfortunate and serve no purpose.
