The Electoral Commission of Ghana has opened nominations for the 2020 parliamentary and presidential candidates. Presidential candidates are t file a fee of GHC 100,000 and Parliamentary candidates at GHC 10,000 in a banker’s draft.
The EC will be receiving the nomination forms from Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 9, 2020. The forms will be received between 9 am and 12 noon and between 2pm and 5pm of each day schedule for the nominations.
Due to the COVID-19, the commission will make the forms available on its websites for all which a unique password will be given to General Secretaries of the various political parties to have access to. For independent candidates, they should visit the IT department for the passwords to access the forms .
“This year’s nominations will be different from previous nominations. As you are all aware, we are operating in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the commission has introduced a number of measures to reduce human contact and human traffic and its activities and operations to a large extent. Our commitment to promote and undertake a COVID-19 free election has largely informed and influenced the changes we have made to our activities and the nomination process is not left out,” Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa said.
Parliamentary candidates are to submit their nominations to the Chairperson and parliamentary candidates are to submit their forms to their district offices.
Only five people will be allowed to submit the forms instead the large crowd that follow candidates to file their nominations and this is because to the presence of COVID-19.
