The Ghana Medical Association has said they do not support the legalization of commercial motorbikes popularly referred to as Okada.
The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama mention that when he returns to power he will legalize Okada when he was speaking to the chiefs and people of Kpando. He also mention it at the launch of the party’s manifesto.
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the launch of the Voikswagon and BlackIvy assembly plant said the New Patriotic Party will not legalize Okada but will rather provide a better alternative by leasing cars to these riders.
But speaking in an interview, the Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association, Frank Serebour said “What is the meaning of the legalization of okada that we are talking about. It is illegal for them to jump traffic but what do we see. It will be impossible to regulate them. We should not start this. Let’s look at the statistics. Vehicles are in higher numbers in the country but most accidents recorded in the country are from motors (okada). We have a problem. We should be looking at our problems and how to address them as there are clear issues we need to address.“
Dr. Serebour rather ask political parties to address the current issues worrying Ghanaians and not the legalization of the Okada.
