COP George Mensah, a key figure in the alleged plot to oust the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, made a startling assertion during his appearance before the ad-hoc parliamentary committee investigating the matter on Friday, September 1, 2023.
The top police chief claimed that the leaked tape at the centre of the controversy had been orchestrated by IGP Dampare himself, and he asserted that Dr Dampare possessed the original, unaltered recording.
He expressed his belief that the audio currently under scrutiny had been extensively manipulated.
When pressed by committee members for the whereabouts of the purported original tape, COP Mensah suggested that they should seek it from Dr. Dampare, as he believed the IGP had commissioned its creation.
According to COP Mensah, individuals dispatched by the IGP had recorded the conversation, after which Dr Dampare had taken possession of the tape and subsequently caused its release.
He contended that if the committee sought access to the tape, they should contact the IGP for its retrieval.
“My intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP. He sent some people to do it and after which he went for it and so the tape, from my intel is with the IGP, and he caused it to be leaked and so if this committee wants the tape, then it should contact the IGP for it.”
