The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito has said that the timing for increasing electricity tariffs in wrong.
He said although there is a need to increase tariffs, the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) should concentrate on compensating consumers who have lost their properties through the erratic power supply the country is experiencing recently.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi TV, Mr Kapito said “The timing is very wrong considering what the Ghanaian is going through when it comes to these recent power outages. The outages are the concern of the Ghanaian. I think if the outages are solved or resolved, we can look at these non-tariffs that ECG is proposing.”
“PURC [Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission] should actually look at what has gone on with the recent power outages as to how they will compensate Ghanaians who might have their appliances destroyed,” he added.
The Electricity of Ghana (ECG) has requested to PURC to increase its tariffs to aid its operational activities.
This has not gone down well most Ghanaians with many saying the company should solve the erratic power supply.
The last time electricity tariff was increased was in October 2019.
