Muntaka Mubarak , the minority’s Chief Whip in Parliament has waded into the debate on Okada arguing that the commercial motorbikes should be legalized because it will create a source of employment for the youth.
Okada over last few weeks has become a debatable issue between the two leading political parties with the opposition National Democratic Congress saying it will legalize it when it returns to power whiles the ruling party, New Patriotic Party say it will not legalize it but will provide a better alternative by leasing cars to the riders saying Okada is risky.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii sen, the MP for Asawase in the Ashanti Region says he supports the call to legalize the business of Okada so that can create employment to the teeming youth who have no jobs.
“The legalisation will come with associated rules and regulations so, for instance, if you are not 18, you can’t ride a motorcycle, you must also be part of a cooperative for registration,” he said.
He also said the legalization of Okada will give room for it to be regularized so that the dangers of it will be reduced.
“We will also have demarcated lanes for the riders and ensure they stick to it.” he added
