Heavy rains on Saturday, 23 October 2021, submerged the Wawase Roman Catholic JHS in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, destroying teaching and learning materials.

The school floods any time it rains heavily leading to the destruction of textbooks and computers.

The perennial flooding of the school is a result of downflowing floodwaters from the Wawase mountains which have cut their own path through the school due to human settlements.

The school’s management committee chairman, Mr Daniel Ozour, lamented that if the authorities fail to urgently fix the problem, things will get out of control and the incessant flooding will lead to the closure of the school.

He said letters, pictures and videos of the destruction have been sent to the Yilo Krobo education directorate but to no avail despite coming to inspect the situation.

The pupils and teachers have also abandoned the school due to the floods.

According to Mr Ozour, the best solution will be to construct a big storm drain to carry the floodwaters away as well as a wall over the JHS block.

He called on the government, NGOs and stakeholders who are into education to come to their aid.
