The General Secretary of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Mr Bawa Fuseini, has said their priority for world youth gold medalist Martha Bissah is to get her back into competitive tournaments after almost a decade of absence from representing the country.

The 24-year-old athlete had been on suspension for the last six years for wrongfully accusing the GAA of extortion but was forced to apologise last week; an action which saw the suspension lifted through a statement released by the Executive Council of the GAA.

Speaking to CTV,  Bawa Fuseini revealed that the association would engage Martha Bissa to fashion out the way forward in getting her back to competitive races.

He added that there’s no need to hold a grudge with the athlete after she showed remorse hence the Association will engage her on her training and career development to reach higher heights.

The General Secretary said it took the Association not more than 30 minutes to resolve Martha Bissah’s issues after she turned in her apology.

According to Bawa Fuseini, the GAA had no hard time forgiving the 2014 youth gold medalist as the goal of each executive member of the association is to help the young athlete in her career path.

“Once the person has accepted that she has done wrong, the next step is to move on and help her get more coaches and competitions. Once the girl has come back, let’s put the past behind us” – Bawa Fuseini on Martha Bissah’s return.

Bawa Fuseini says the association is now more focused on working to develop the athlete to prepare and help to get her to qualify for upcoming athletic competitions.

“What we’re working on, is to support and help her to get on her back on her feet and also get her qualified for the world championship and all Africa games that will be hosted in Ghana and hopefully win a medal for Ghana,” Bawa Fuseini added.

Martha Bissah is now eligible to represent Ghana in all competitions after her indefinite suspension in 2016.

Martha won Ghana a gold medal in the women 800m race in the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.
