Some residents of Bontefuo-Ahwerewa and other adjoining communities in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti region have accused the region’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi of abandoning the construction the community’s road network.
According to the residents, the Ashanti Regional Chairman was awarded the contract of constructing the community’s road network but abandoned it for unknown reasons.
The residents indicated that the road has become unmotorable.
The residents further indicated armed robbers have taken advantage of the poor state of the road to torment road users while drivers have increased fares making life unbearable for residents.
Some residents who spoke to ClassFM’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Elisha Adarkwah blamed the NPP regional chairman for the poor condition of the road.
“The road has become dangerous, we plead with President Akufo-Addo to come to our aid. He has really deceived us. Chairman Wontumi, brought people to pull down things on the road in a bid to begin construction work. The President should speak to Chairman Wontumi else when it’s time for elections, they [NPP] should not step foot here.”
Another resident said: “I’ve been defending the party, but I’m highly disappointed now. Chairman Wontumi that he [President Akufo-Addo] gave the construction of the road to has really disappointed us. He came to pull down gutters and other things in a bid to begin construction work on the road.
“It won’t happen, no one will vote for Chairman Wontumi, the number of persons who have died on this road, are uncountable.”
They also noted that should the ruling NPP lose the 2024 general elections, the party should blame the regional chairman.
They appealed to the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene, and ensure that the regional chairman returns to fixing the community’s road network.
On his part, the Chief of Bontefuo-Ahwerewa, Nana Osei Owusu Kuffour Ababio explained that the abandoned road network has brought a lot of hardship on members of the area and called on government to fix it.
“In March 2020, prior to the elections, we had a press conference, where we laid our grievances before government. They deceived us by attempting to fix it. So we thought they were going to fix it, only for it to be abandoned after the elections.
“There is too much dust on the road, there’s no signage indicating who the contractor is so that if we have any issues we can talk to them. Drivers have increased fares, the road is causing accidents, our people are not happy at all,” the Chief stated.
