Dominic Ntiwul, the Minister of Defence has guaranteed Ghanaians of the government’s dedication to resource the nation’s security forces to ensure peace in the nation ahead of the December polls.
Mr Nitiwul reiterated the government’s resilience to ensure that secessionists as well as others that threaten the tranquility of the country do not do well.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference to mark the anniversary, Mr. Nitiwul said “In 1960, we started off with our peacekeeping effort in the Congo and so Ghana has been a pioneer and a leading member of the world’s peacekeeping and not just for the UN. We’ve also done the same for Africa, for West Africa. Ghana essentially had to put up men in uniform to go free up Liberia when Liberia was burning. Sierra Leone the same thing, Cote d’Ivoire the same thing and so Ghana has stood very firm and tall when it comes to the issue of peacekeeping all over the world. We’ve done over 30 peacekeeping missions across the whole world.
“From the far East to the Middle East, to Africa to Asia, to South America to virtually every part of the world. So when it comes to peacekeeping, apparently, everybody acknowledges that the men and women of the armed forces, the Police service, prison service, the Immigration service have really done the black race a lot of good. Especially people from Ghana. They’re some of the most professional soldiers and professional peacekeepers you can find around the world.”
Mr Nitiwul also noted that because of the professionalism of the nation’s security forces that go on peacekeeping, they are commended by countries throughout.
“When I visited them in Lebanon, you could clearly feel it, the President told me point blank that if they were to ask people to leave, Ghana will be the last people that they’ll want them to leave his area because of the professionalism that they attach to peacekeeping. So it’s clear that Ghana has stood and done its part when it comes to world peace, that’s why I always encourage us to maintain that.”
Mr Ntiwul indicated that the country is able to export peace because Ghanaians are peace loving people and assured residents of the government’s initiatives to make sure that the nation’s security forces are well resourced to keep the peace of the nation.
“I think the government has put in every effort to ensure that that we remain one nation and we remain peaceful and I can assure you, the government will continue to give all the resources to the men in uniform to ensure that Ghana is peaceful. We’ve been engaging everybody, the chiefs, the opinion leaders, the people, to win the hearts and minds of all the people in the area.”
