Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has captained Columbus Crew to win the 2020 MLS cup after defeating Seattle Sounders FC 3-0 at the Mapfre Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
A dominant performance from Columbus Crew saw Lucas Zelarayin scoring a brace and Derek Etienne adding one to help Columbus Crew defeat defending champions Seattle Sounders in a tensed finals.
The win is Columbus Crew’s first MLS Cup triumph in 12 years.
Jonathan Mensah who captained them to the tittle dedicated the win to their home fans.
“It’s been an incredible journey for the club, for the city and for the people of Columbus.
“We are so grateful for their sacrifices off the field, and what we could do to kind of like pay them back was to win this trophy for them. So thankful that we have this amazing fan base behind us and you know we did this for them.
“For this to be possible today, it is by their efforts and their fight off the field, their determination, their resiliency, got us to where we are now, for us to be able to accomplish this mission. So it was so emotional for me” he said after the game.
Jonathan Mensah was named in the 2020 MLS best IX of the season which was announced to him by his wife Kafui Mensah at the club’s training grounds.
Other Ghanaian Internationals who got featured for Columbus Crew to the tittle was Emmanuel Boateng and Harisson Afful who provided an assist in the final game.
