The National Democratic Congress has formally file a petition at the Supreme Court over the just ended election results announced by the Electoral Commission.
This follows the series of demonstrations that took place in some parts of the country.
The suit was filed today, Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the apex court by the lawyers of the flagbearer of the presidential candidate of the party, John Mahama.
The NDC in a statement said the petition contains “serious violations of the 1992 Constitution by the Electoral Commission and its Chairperson and Returning Officer for the Presidential Election, Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa in the conduct of their constitutional and legal responsibilities.”
The petition seeks among others, a declaration from the Supreme Court to the effect that, “the purported declaration of the results of the 2020 Presidential Election on the 9th day of December 2020 is unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”
The Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensah announced on December 9, 2020 that the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has won the presidential race with 51.3 percent of the valid votes cast while the Mr. Mahama followed in the second position with 47.7 percent of valid votes cast.
The NDC has since rejected the election results describing it as ‘fictionalized’ and its verdict as ‘stolen’.
Mr Mahama will address the country on the suit filed later today at 8 pm.
