Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has re-echoed Ghana’s commitment to the SDG 7 to achieve universal access to electrification by 2025 through the development of eco-friendly energy supply chain, double access to clean cooking fuels and technologies.
Speaking on separate platforms on the sidelines of COP26 in Glasgow, the Minister said Ghana has made modest progress in many areas of the energy sector and strived to achieved more especially as energy is one of the most important global issues for discussion from industrialisation, social and economic development and climate change viewpoints.
The Manhyia South legislator at the Ghana Energy Day event highlighted investment opportunities in utility scale, distributed generation, mini-grid and off-grid renewable energy based-electrification systems that are available for investment.
He stressed that Ghana’s energy mix has significant contributions from Renewable Energy Sources, particularly hydro, which forms the base load energy in the country and, therefore, an enabling environment has been created by our government to collaborate with the private sector. All these according to Dr. Prempeh are critical steps in consolidating the country’s renewable energy efforts.
Dr. Prempeh participating as a panelist at an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Event on the theme “Nuclear Innovation for a Net-Zero World”, said, to make nuclear energy penetrate the minds of African leaders as a safe source, a lot more education and public sensitisation need to be launched aggressively.
This, in his view would ensure that they become fully aware of the good and the dangers associated with this important energy resource.
The Minister emphasised at a meeting with African Energy Ministers that Ghana continues to commit to all international agreements which would ensure that the subject matter of energy and conversations around it gains the needed significance especially as the African continent and their leaders strive to ensure that their citizens benefit from various energy resources.
