The Takoradi Police Divisional Command has commenced investigations into the alleged kidnapping of a 26-year-old woman, Stephanie Kumiwaa at Mpohor in the Western Region.

This follows a media publication of the alleged kidnapping.

The kidnapping, alleged to have taken place on Sunday, 17 October 2021, was published in the media.

A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service and signed by its Western Regional Head of Public Affairs Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Olivia Adiku on Wednesday, 3 November 2021, however, revealed that the incident was false.

“Checks at Mpohor Police District Command indicated that no such case had been reported there.”

According to the Police, following the publication of the incident, it arrested the “alleged boyfriend of the victim, 33-year-old, Stephen Kumi” and one other person, Paa Kwesi Simpson, “who published the story” to assist them with investigations.

“The Suspect, Stephen Kumi informed the Police during interrogation that he met the victim on Facebook and they started dating,” the statement said.

The alleged boyfriend of the victim said she called on Sunday, 17 October 2021, to inform that she was visiting him but never showed up.

He however received a call on Tuesday, 19 October from a friend of the victim that someone called on the victim’s phone that she had been kidnapped.

The suspected kidnappers demanded a ransom of GHS2000.

The boyfriend was escorted to Mpohor by the Police, however all efforts to locate his girlfriend’s residence and family members proved futile.

The suspect is currently in Police custody while the other person who published the story, is on Police enquiry bail.
