The police have arrested Kwame Ato Asare, popularly known as Kwame Ani, after a month of leading an attack on a police patrol team in Axim in the Western Region.
Kwame Ani, who has been on the police radar as the prime suspect, went into hiding following the incident.
He was, however, granting interviews in the media, accusing the Axim District Police Commander, the Crime Officer and other officers of extortion.
According to a release by the police, “these are currently being investigated by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB)”.
Kwame Ani was arrested on Friday, April 21 at a village near Enchi in the Western North Region together with three other suspects, namely Williams Kwofie, Richard Kwesi and Emmanuel Kojo Bronie.
This brings to eight, the number of suspects arrested in connection with the crime.
“With his arrest, Kwame Ato Asare is expected to assist the investigation into the said allegations and any Police officer found culpable will be put through the due process to be sanctioned in accordance with the laws of the country,” the police said in its statement.
